1935: The Sporting News discusses White Sox hurler George Earnshaw's "new pitch" and calls it a "slider" for the first time in print. Earnshaw credits Waite Hoyt for showing him the pitch, Hoyt credits George Uhle and some people say none of that is true that it was George Blaeholder and it was hitters facing him in the 1929 season who named the pitch. So if someone ever asks you who invented the slider, just respond, "George Somebody," and chances are good you are correct 1977: Just before an exhibition game, Texas Rangers manager Frank Lucchesi and player Lenny Randle get into an argument that turns physical. The fight ends with Lucchesi taken to the hospital with a fractured cheekbone and Randle fined an undisclosed amount. Randle will also be traded to the Mets for a player to be named later (Rick Auerbach) less than a month later. Lucchesi will be fired in June in another bizzare chapter of Rangers history as the team goes through 4 managers in a 7-day period. Today's Birthdays: Lonnie Warneke, 1909 in Mount Ida, Arkansas Victor John Angelo Raschi, 1919 in West Springfield, Massachusetts Glenn Earle Davis, 1961 in Jacksonville, Florida Paul Anthony Wilson, 1973 in Orlando, Florida March 29 1954: The Cubs fire player-manager Phil Cavaretta during spring training after Cavaretta tells Chicago owner Philip Wrigley that the Cubs have a slim chance to compete in the NL in 1954. Cavaretta, who had been in the Cubs organization for 20 years at the time, winds up playing with the crosstown White Sox the next two seasons to close out his career. 1973: Spurred by the desires of Athletics owner Charlie Finley, orange baseballs are used in an exhibition game between Oakland and Cleveland. The Indians thrash the A's, 11-5. 2000: From Baseball Library>>> The Cubs open the major league season in the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, by defeating the Mets, 5-3, in the first big league game ever played outside of North America. Jon Lieber gets the victory and new ace Mike Hampton takes the loss. Shane Andrews hits the first home run of the new millennium. Mark Grace and Mike Piazza also homer. Herzog jumps on Cobb and the two fight fiercely until separated. Herzog challenges Cobb to a fight and says he'll be in Cobb's room at 10 p.m. and both will be accompanied by one teammate. Herzog and Heinie Zimmerman show up, but Cobb has eight teammates on hand. Herzog knocks the Tiger star down with his first punch but Cobb gets up and hammers the New Yorker until the two are finally separated. Cobb refuses to play the remaining games with the Giants, and at the end of the week the New York players send him a postcard: "It's safe to rejoin your club; we've left." 1978: The Boston Red Sox acquire right-hander Dennis Eckersley, along with catcher Fred Kendall, from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for catcher Bo Diaz, third baseman Ted Cox and right-handers Rick Wise and Mike Paxton. Eck will enjoy his only 20-win season for the Sox that year, going 20-8 with a 2.99 ERA and finishing 4th in the Cy Young voting on his way to an eventual Hall of Fame invite. Wise, on the other hand, will be charged with 19 losses pitching for the Tribe in '78. The American League will adopt the DH a dozen years later. 1970: The Seattle Pilots, who have played just one season in the AL, are purchased by Milwaukee car salesman Bud Selig, relocated to Wisconsin and rechristened the Brewers. The Pilots owners had run into bankruptcy troubles and a judge accepted what was reported to be a $10 million offer from Selig and his fellow investors in a truly last minute move. The new Brewers will open the season witha pair of losses to the Angels on April 7-8, then play their first home game in Milwaukee on April 10. 2001: The Pittsburgh Pirates open their new PNC Park with a 4-3 loss to the New York Mets in an exhibition contest. 1947: The short-lived American Baseball Guild, the first successful players union, establishes a new minimum salary for players in the majors ($5,500), also getting the owners to kick in expense money and the first-ever players pension. Lawyer Robert Murphy, former head of the National Labor Relations Board, is in charge of the Guild, but it is the work of St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Marty Marion that proves most critical as far as the pension plan goes. The present-day players union succeeds the Guild shortly thereafter. 1950: The PCL Hollywood Stars take the field in short pants, becoming the second team to try the uniform change. The Houston Buffaloes of the Texas League wore shorts in the 1949 season, but that idea didn't take since mosquites proved to be a problem for players in Houston. 1999: Hideki Irabu, the Japanese import the New York Yankees have brought in, is unaffectionately nicknamed "Fat Toad" by owner George Steinbrenner after Irabu fails to hustle during an exhibition contest. According to Baseball Library, the new moniker comes with an even less kind middle name Today's Birthdays: John Geoffrey "Jeff" Heath, 1915 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada Ronald Peter Perranoski, 1936 in Paterson, New Jersey Philip Henry Niekro, 1939 in Blaine, Ohio Daniel Joseph "Rusty" Staub, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana Matthew Tyler Herges, 1970 in Champaign, Illinois April 02 1931: Jackie Mitchell, a 17-yr-old person of the female persuasion, whiffs both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back-to-back in an exhibition game for the Chattanooga Lookouts against the Yankees. A court injunction against using replacement players forced the truce in the battle. Veterans begin reporting to came for what will be a shortened 1995 schedule (144 games). 2001: During a 7-3 Yankees win over the Royals, Roger Clemens ties Walter Johnson's AL mark of 3,509 career strikeouts. The Braves thought they had Seaver signed a few weeks earlier for $40,000, but since Seaver had already started pitching for the USC Trojans, the contract was voided by then-commish William Eckert. Seaver, after signing with the Mets, is declared ineligible by the NCAA and this caused a special draft to be setup by MLB. He will eventually report to New York's Triple-A club in Jacksonville. 2002: Ryan Drese becomes the emergency starter for Cleveland and picks up the dubya in the Indians' 6-5 victory over the Angels. 1925: Yankees slugger Babe Ruth suffers what is called "the bellyache heard round the world," and collapses in a North Carolina train station as New York makes its way north following spring training. The "bellyache" turns out to be much more serious, and Ruth undergoes surgery a couple of weeks later for an intestinal abscess. He will not see any action until June 1st that season. 1974: Fred Snodgrass dies at his home in Ventura, California, at the age of 86. A speedy outfielder for some strong Giants teams in the 1910s, Snodgrass is unfortunately remembered mostly for dropping a fly ball in the dusk of Game 7 in the 1912 World Series that leads to the Boston Red Sox' eventual win. in other words, he was the Bill Buckner of his day, the irony being that Snodgrass' misplay gave Boston a title. Snodgrass will go on to a successful post-baseball life as a rancher, and eventually serve as mayor of Oxnard, California. Today's Birthdays: William Edward "Wid" Conroy, 1877 in Camden, New Jersey Ronald Lavern Hansen, 1938 in Oxford, Nebraska Renaldo Antonio "Rennie" Stennett, 1951 in Colon, Panama Ryan Thomas Drese, 1976 in San Francisco, California Brandon Allen Backe, 1978 in Galveston, Texas April 06 1929: The Cleveland Indians become the first team to sport uniform numbers on the back of their jerseys. The Yankees had actually announced they were going to use numbers on the backs of players earlier that year, but the Indians beat them to the field with the notion. In 1916, the Indians had worn numbers on their sleeves, the very first time numbers appeared anywhere on player uniforms. 1973: Ron Blomberg of the Yankees becomes the first official DH in MLB history when New York faces Boston. Larry Dierker goes the distance to pickup the win over Atlanta's Phil Niekro. Jose Cruz has 3 hits, including a homer, and drives in half of Houston's runs. Though the uniforms are a success in this game, they will not help the Astros avoid the NL West cellar that season. 1988: Work to install lights at venerable old Wrigley Field begins after the Chicago City Council approved the move earlier that spring. It will be later that season before Wrigley hosts its first night game, and that contest is rained out. 2000: Houston's new Enron Field holds its first official game with the visiting Phillies topping the Astros 4-1. Enron president Kenneth Lay throws out the first pitch and Texas governor George W. Bush, who will be elected US president in about 8 months, is also on hand.
